Why does this matter?

When some by-products or food items are wasted or discarded, it not only affects the value of the food itself, but also the utilization efficiency of the food system and food security, including water, land, and some energy resources. Therefore, reutilization measures that fully utilize existing resources may be able to reduce losses to a certain extent. However, the extent to which they can play a role in the food system still requires further research.

  • The reuse measures do not merely convert by-products or wasted food into new food, but can also transform them into useful resources such as fertilizers, feed, new materials or packaging, etc.
  • Food security is not only about the more efficient utilization of resources within the food system, but also relates to affordability and accessibility.
  • The actual impact of the reuse strategy depends on the scale of its actual application.
